Panopto is a video platform with unlimited storage, available to all faculty and students at Notre Dame. Panopto has three primary uses:

  1. Video hosting - Linking, embedding, and sharing videos: Within Sakai, via email, or your own course site.
  2. Screencasting - Use the Panopto software to record video, audio, PowerPoint, or your personal computer. Record your lecture on your own or record in the privacy of your home or office.
  3. Lecture capture - Recording live lectures automatically using classroom equipment.

1. Upload and share content you already have or add things you find on YouTube.

For more help, see:

2. Use Panopto to record content on your own.

Panopto makes it easy to create and share content. You can use it to help you flip your class, quickly create extra content, answer student questions, or read through your syllabus. Panopto can record your computer’s screen, webcam, and microphone and then instantly share the recording with your class. Just as importantly, you can reuse that content as many times as you want, in as many courses as you want.

Regardless of why you choose to do so, it's easy to use Panopto to record and share your lectures:

  1. Turn on the Panopto tool in Sakai.
  2. Install and configure the Panopto software on your laptop. (Don't have a laptop? Contact us.)
  3. Start your recording when class begins and stop it when class ends. (The recording uploads automatically and will probably be ready for students before you're back in your office.)
  4. Look at analytics to see which content is most popular. You can also see which students are watching the most content.

3. Automatically record my lectures? Why would I want to do that?

Automatically recording your lectures with Panopto means you walk into your classroom and start teaching as you normally would. Projected content, video of the chalkboard area, and audio are automatically recorded during your scheduled class time. After class ends the recording is uploaded and processed automatically and students can watch it about an hour later. This is a great service for the students if they weren't able to attend or need to review a difficult concept in the lecture but consider a few other scenarios:

Only certain classrooms currently have the necessary technology for these recordings. If you are teaching in one of these rooms or would like to request a room have the technology installed that is needed to record, contact servicedesk@nd.edu.
