In order to connect to the wired network, you will need the hardware to do so:
- A device with an Ethernet port: Most current computers come with an Ethernet port located on the back or side of the computer (some newer laptops, and most mobile devices do not have Ethernet ports)
- An Ethernet cable
- An available Ethernet port on the wall: With few exceptions, all rooms in residence halls and most campus offices are equipped with Ethernet ports or “jacks” on the wall. In most cases, the jacks are arranged similar to the diagram below
Be sure your computer is powered off when you first plug it into the wired network. Once you’re physically plugged into the wired network, power it on and follow one of the methods below for registering your device into the correct wired network zone:
- Register a device via zonereg.nd.edu. Faculty, Staff and Students can use the Zoned Network Registration site for manually registering their wired network devices on the ND wired zoned network. Any person with a valid NetID can register wired network devices. This site is useful for registering wired devices that do not have a web browser.
- Authenticate via a web page. This option is ONLY for administrative and academic buildings (NOT residence halls). If your device has a web browser, after booting your device, Faculty, Staff and Students can open a web browser and visit wired.byod.nd.edu where you will be required to enter your NetID and password to register your wired device and have access to the wired network.
- Request that your device be manually assigned to a network zone. If you have a device that does not have a web browser (e.g., printers, research devices) but that must be connected to the network, you can also contact your assigned IT Support Consultant or the OIT Help Desk at (574) 631-8111. They will assist you in connecting your system to the Zoned Network.
In order to ensure current registration information, you may be required to re-authenticate to the wired network approximately once per year.
If you have any questions or need help connecting your system to the network, please contact your departmental IT support staff or the OIT Help Desk for assistance.
