Google Chat is Replacing Google Hangouts as the Preferred Messaging Service
On Wednesday, July 1, 2020, the OIT will enable the setting to make Google Chat the preferred messaging service in Google replacing Classic Hangouts for all Notre Dame Google accounts. This change may take up to 24 hours to appear in your account. Note: Google Meet, the video conferencing service from Google, is not impacted by this change.
No action is required unless you need to copy any group messages from Classic Hangouts to Chat. (see Google Chat Migration below)
New Features
- Rooms for improved team collaboration
- Upgraded Gmail Integration
- A classic Hangouts bot will notify you of any missed Classic Hangouts group messages from organizations that have not switched to Chat
Google Chat History
To comply with information security best practices, all message history for direct messages, group messaging, and chat rooms will be automatically deleted, on a continual basis, after 180 days.
Google Chat Migration
- The chat history for direct messages to an individual in Classic Hangouts will be migrated to Google Chat. This will remain accessible and searchable in Gmail only if you enabled history for each individual in your Classic Hangouts.
- Group messages from Classic Hangouts (including their history) will not be copied to Google Chat.
- Possible Action Needed - if you have important group messages in Classic Hangouts, just copy and paste your group messages into a shared document for your records.
