Question

How do I connect my computer to the wired network?

Context

Faculty and staff can follow these instructions.

NOTE:  As part of the sustainability initiative Wireless First, the OIT deactivated all wired jacks in residence hall rooms. Although wired connections are no longer available in the dorms, the wireless network has been upgraded and can be utilized to connect all of your personal devices.  Effective Fall of 2023, computing, gaming and entertainment systems will only be supported on the wireless network.  Provisions have been made to support multi-player gaming through a registration portal. For additional details see this article.

Answer

In order to connect to the wired network, you will need the hardware to do so:

  • A device with an Ethernet port: Most current computers come with an Ethernet port located on the back or side of the computer
    • Some laptops, and most mobile devices do not have Ethernet ports. You may be able to purchase an adapter for your laptop to add an Ethernet option (check with the vendor or store you purchased it from)
  • An Ethernet cable (can be purchased at the Hammes Hub in the Bookstore or your preferred electronics supplier)
    cat-5 ethernet cable
  • An available Ethernet port on the wall: Most campus offices are equipped with Ethernet ports or “jacks” on the wall.
    • Note: If you've not used a network jack recently, it may not be active. You can request a network jack be activated following these instructions.

  • Note: Faculty and staff with access to only one jack can connect the computer to the VoIP telephone in their office, enabling the two devices to share a single wall jack.  See pic of telephone connections. The cable to the computer must be connected to the jack with the computer icon above it (right on the photo below).

To register your device to the wired network follow these instructions:

  1. Before plugging the device into the wired network, use a web browser (on any device) and visit netreg.nd.edu and login with your NetID and password.
  2. Complete the form that appears:
    1. Ethernet/MAC address - Follow these instructions to locate the MAC address for your device.
    2. Device Type - from the provided list select the closest match to the type of device you are registering
    3. User NetID - should be the NetID of the user or owner of the device
    4. Admin NetID - usually would be the same as the User NetID

  3. When you've completed the form click Register.
  4. With the device powered OFF, connect the Ethernet cable to both your computer and the network jack in your room.
  5. Turn the device ON
  6. It should now be ready for use on the wired network.

If the device does not work on the network, the network jack may not be active.  If there is a different network jack available, try connecting to that.  If this is the only available jack, submit a network jack activation request form
