How do I work using the Temporary Files space in a Virtual Computer Lab or Virtual Desktop?

The MOST reliable and secure storage you will use in a virtual desktop environment is Google Drive. Instructions for connecting to Google Drive are available in this article. However, there may be situations where excessively large files significantly degrade your experience in the virtual desktop environment. In this case, you can use the Temporary Files space to save and access files during your session.

Any files that are not downloaded or uploaded to cloud storage before you end your session will be lost.

Where is Temporary Files located in the virtual desktop environment?

You can access the Temporary Files space under the My Files button. If you have connected Google Drive, you will see that storage option as well.

You can also access Temporary Files from the Save As dialog box in most applications. You may need to expand the This PC option in the left menu to see the Temporary Files folder.

How do I upload files stored locally on my computer to Temporary Files?

Temporary Files provides a method for easily accessing files stored on your own computer.

Uploading a file to Temporary Files creates a copy of the file that will have to be downloaded before the end of your session.

  1. Click Temporary Files and then click Upload.

  2. You will be presented with an Open File dialog box from your native operating system. Select one or more files to upload and click Open.

  3. The file will be copied into the Temporary Files space for you to work with.

How do I save files from Temporary Files before ending my session?

When you are ready to end your session, any files in Temporary Files must be either downloaded to your own computer or uploaded to your connected Google Drive.

Any files that are not downloaded or uploaded before you end your session will be lost.

  1. In Temporary Files, select the file's dropdown and click Download.

  2. A window will appear allowing you to save the file back to your own computer or to Google Drive.
