Question

How do I find a MAC address for my networked devices?

Answer

If you are asked to provide your computer MAC address (Media Access Control address) you can locate this on your devices by following the instructions below.

Note: Your machine may have multiple MAC addresses. There will be a MAC address for each connection type your computer has (wireless, wired, bluetooth, etc). You will need to supply the MAC address for the connection type you are having issues with. 

Computers

Windows Operating System

1. Click the Start Menu

2. Click the Settings gear

3. Click Network & Internet

a. For Wireless connection issues:

i. Click Wi-Fi in the left panel

ii. Click Hardware properties

iii. Look for Physical address (MAC):

b. For Wired connection issues

i. Click Ethernet

ii. Double click the listing present. This will change depending on the network you are connected to. If on campus it may say ND.EDU. If not connected to anything, it will say Ethernet

iii. Look for Physical address (MAC):

Apple Operating System:

There is a MAC address for each way your machine can connect to the Network. If you are having trouble with your Wi-Fi, you will need to provide the MAC address for your wireless adapter. If you are having trouble with a Wired Ethernet connection, you will need to provide the MAC address for the wired adapter. Review the following directions for instructions on how to find both.

1. Open System Preferences

2. Select the Network icon

a. For the Wi-Fi MAC address:

i. Highlight the Wi-Fi selection on the left, and click the Advanced button in the lower right hand corner

ii. Select the Hardware Tab. The MAC Address should be the first piece of information listed.

b. For the Ethernet MAC Address

i. Highlight the Ethernet selection on the left, and click the Advanced button in the lower right hand corner.

ii. Select the Hardware tab. The MAC Address should be the first piece of information listed. 

 

Cell Phones

iOS Device (iPad/iPhone/iTouch)

1. Tap Settings

2. Select General

3. Select About

4. The MAC address is listed as Wi-Fi Address (Example: AB:CD:EF:12:34:56)

Android Device (Phone/Tablet)

**Instructions for Android devices vary by make/model. 

1. Tap on the Settings App

2. Select System

3. Select About

4. the MAC address is listed as Wi-Fi MAC address (Example: AB:CD:EF:12:34:56)

Popular Gaming Devices

Microsoft

Xbox

1. Power on your Xbox without a disc in the system. 

2. Select Settings in the Xbox dashboard, then select Network Settings

3. The MAC address of the system is located in the bottom right-hand corner of the Network Settings screen (It usually has “MAC=” in front of it).

Xbox 360

1. Power on your XBOX 360 without a disc in the system. 

2. Scroll (if necessary) to My Xbox.

3. On the right, select System Settings.

4. On the next screen, select Network Settings.

5. Select Configure Network.

6. Select the Additional Settings tab.

7. Select Advanced Settings.

8. Toward the bottom of the screen you should see Wired MAC Address. The MAC Address consists of the characters below this.

Xbox One

1. Go to My Xbox in the Xbox dashboard and select Settings.

2. In the Settings pane, select Network.

3. Select Advanced Settings from the Network Settings tab.

4. At the bottom of this screen, you'll see a heading for Wired MAC and Wireless MAC

Xbox Series X or Series S

1. Navigate to the Settings page.

2. Select Network.

3. Select Advanced Settings.

4. Under IP settings, the MAC address will be listed next to Wired MAC and Wireless MAC on the right-hand side of the screen (this is also where the IP address and other information is located).

Sony

PlayStation 2

1. Power on your PlayStation 2 with the Network Adaptor start-up disc

2. Once the disc is loaded, select ISP Setup and then agree to the license agreement that is presented. 

3. When prompted for a network type, select Local Area Network (LAN)

4. Next select Automatic Configuration

5. At the Connection Test screen, select Advanced

6. On the next screen you should see the MAC address of the system.

PlayStation 3

1. Navigate to Settings.

2. Select System Settings.

3. Select System Information.

4. View information on the PS3 system. The MAC address is shown there.

PS4

1. Power on the PS4 without a disc in the system.

2. In the PS4 menu, arrow up and select Settings.

3. Scroll down to Network.

4. Scroll down to View Connection Status.

5. The MAC Address will be listed next to MAC Address (LAN) and MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

PS5

1. Power on the PS5 without a disc in the system.

2. In the PS5 menu, arrow up and select Settings.

3. Scroll down to Network.

4. Scroll down to View Connection Status.

5. The MAC Address will be listed next to MAC Address (LAN) and MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

Nintendo

Wii

1. From the Wii Channel screen, select the Wii button, then go into Wii Settings.

2. On the second page, find the option Internet, then go to Console Information

3. This screen should have a line with USB Ethernet Adapter MAC Address or LAN Adapter MAC Address or similar. 

Nintendo Switch

1. Select System Settings from the HOME menu.

2. Scroll down and select Internet.

3. The Nintendo Switch console's MAC address will be listed under System MAC Address.
