Issue: A Gmail account has been delegated to you, and you need to know how to access it
Context: Gmail, Delegated Inbox
Resolution:
- Log into your Gmail account: Navigate to mail.google.com and sign in with your Notre Dame credentials.
- Access the account switcher: Click your account photo or the circle with your first initial located in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.
- Open the delegated account: Locate the delegated account listed below your primary ND account and click on it.
- Work in the new tab: The delegated inbox will open in a separate browser tab, allowing you to manage emails and contacts for that account.
- Initial setup: No manual setup is required. If the delegation has been granted but the account does not appear, try refreshing your browser.
Important Notes:
- Separate Inboxes: A Delegated Inbox is entirely separate from your primary NetID@nd.edu account. Emails sent to the Delegated Inbox address will only appear in that specific inbox.
- Sender Transparency: By default, recipients will see the delegator's name. However, when recipients open the message, they will be able to see that you sent the message on the individual's behalf (your email address will be listed in parentheses along with "sent by" next to the delegator's name). Looks similar to this:
- If you prefer that your personal email address not be visible as the sender, you can modify the settings.
- Open your email account.
- Click the Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.
- Select the Accounts and Import tab.
- In the Send mail as section, find the delegated address and click edit info.
- Check the box for Treat as an alias and click Save changes.
- When you are in a Compose window under your Gmail account, you can switch to sending from the Delegated Inbox.
- If you prefer that your personal email address not be visible as the sender, you can modify the settings.
