Note: In order to provide students the ability to watch content without an active internet connection (for students with limited internet access or who may be traveling), videos can be cached in the Panopto apps on iOS and Android. Details here: How to Use the Panopto Mobile App.

These recordings are stored in the device's protected storage and cannot be copied from the device. This does not allow people to download content to computers. If you would like to ensure videos which have been cached in the mobile apps can't be viewed after a specific date and time (such as during an exam), please see the following article: How to Publish Videos Using the Availability Workflow.

Who Can Download Content

By default, people with Creator rights to a folder can download videos in a folder, but those with only Viewer rights will not be able to do so. Students in courses only have view rights. As such, they can't download content.

Note: Using the Student View within Canvas does not work with Panopto and the rights it shows may not be accurate.

How Do I Allow Downloads

Panopto creates a single mp4 file which can be downloaded and played without an internet connection. For students with limited internet access or who may be traveling, allowing access to downloads can be tremendously valuable.

If you feel you need to download content for your course instead of watching it online, please check with the faculty member teaching the course. If they enable this feature, instructions for downloading the content can be found here: How to Download Video or Audio Streams as MP4s

The ability to download content can be enabled on a per folder or per file basis. Faculty who wish to allow downloading of their content can follow the instructions here: How to Enable Podcast Downloads.

Note: The ability to download is either on or off for all users. It can't be done on a per-user basis.

What Do the Files Look Like

Only One Source

If you only have a single source in your video (just your Webcam or your computer screen), the file Panopto creates is almost exactly what students would see when watching the session on-line.

or

Multiple Sources

For most recordings with more than one source, the downloadable file Panopto creates is a PiP (Picture-in-Picture) view. The video is fairly small and covers the bottom right of the content.

Zoom Cloud Recordings

For Zoom cloud recordings which have been automatically imported, Panopto creates a downloadable file in Side by Side view. The content is somewhat smaller and therefore may be harder to see, but the video is somewhat larger and does not cover any of the content

You can change the format which is downloaded by following the instructions here, How to Change the Format and Preview the Podcast Version of Videos.

Note: It is not possible to download each individual audio and/or video file for editing.

How Do You Download the Files

To download the mp4 file from Panopto:

  1. Go to panopto.nd.edu and sign in with your Notre Dame NetID and Password.

  2. Locate the video you would like to download.

  3. Click on the title of the video to open it.

  4. In the top-right corner of the player, click the Download Arrow.
