Summary

The Form I-9 is used to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired to work in the U.S. Federal law requires employers to only hire individuals who are legally permitted to work in the U.S., including: U.S. citizens.

Within three business days of the start date of employment, federal law requires employers to verify the identity and employment authorization of all newly hired (or rehired) employees by ensuring each employee’s completion of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.

Body

Verification is a two-step process:

  1. Employees must complete and sign Section 1 of Form I-9 no later than their first day of employment.
  2. Within three business days after your first day of employment, you, the employee, must present to NDHR original, acceptable, and unexpired documentation that establishes your identity and employment authorization in order to complete Section 2.   

Below are two options for completion of the Form I-9. Either is acceptable so long as you meet the timeline requirements listed above. Below each option you will find the corresponding links and process. 

Option 1: Virtually via Zoom with an NDHR employee

  1. Complete Form I-9 Section 1 here, uploading your original documents. Be sure to select University of Notre Dame from the drop down menu on page 
  2. Schedule a 15 minute zoom meeting with Calendly in order to complete Section 2. You must ensure this meeting takes place within three business days after your first day of employment in order to avoid suspension, so please check availability!
  3. Attend the zoom meeting to complete Form I-9 Section 2. You must have your original documents with you.

Option 2: In-person at 101 Grace Hall which is co-located with Card Services and Parking Services

  1. Complete Form I-9 Section 1 here. Note this is a different link than Section 1 for the Zoom option, and should only be used if you intend to complete Section 2 in person. 
  2. Schedule a 15 minute appointment with Calendly in order to complete Section 2. You must ensure this meeting takes place within three business days after your first day of employment in order to avoid suspension, so please check availability!
  3. Present original, unexpired documentation to verify your identity and employment authorization at NDHR located in 101 Grace Hall.

Failure to complete either option within three business days of the start date of employment will result in suspension of employment.
