Before You Begin

Zoom cloud recordings will be copied to Panopto, deleted from Zoom, and will only be available in Panopto. More information on accessing and sharing your recordings in Panopto can be found in this knowledge base article.

For most use cases, recording to the Zoom cloud is the recommended option. It is usually easier to follow. However, there are times when recording locally in Zoom is the better choice.

Important note: If you are using Zoom on a classroom computer, do not use the Record on this Computer feature. These recordings will be permanently lost when you log out of the computer.

This article explains how to record locally in Zoom and then upload the recording to Panopto, a supported ND service. Whenever possible, keep recordings short. Short recordings are more likely to be watched, are easier to re-record if needed, and use less internet bandwidth.

While uploading to Panopto adds extra steps, it offers several benefits over recording directly to the Zoom cloud:

Record Locally in Zoom

Note: If you already have a recording or video on your computer, you can upload it directly to Panopto. Skip to Upload to Panopto and Share in Canvas.

Enable the Zoom recording setting

  1. Open the Zoom app on your computer.

  2. Click the Gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings. Zoom settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the Zoom app

  3. Click Recording in the left navigation.

  4. Select Optimize for 3rd party video editor.

  5. No save is needed. You are ready to record.

Record a Zoom meeting locally

  1. Join a Zoom meeting.

  2. Click Record in Zoom.

  3. Click Record on this Computer. Zoom Record menu showing the option to record on this computer

  4. When the meeting ends, Zoom begins processing the recording. When processing is finished, Zoom opens the folder that contains the recording files.

By default, Zoom saves recordings in these folders:

Important note: By default, the audio and video file (.mp4) is named Zoom_0.mp4. The file that ends in .mp4 is the only file you need for now. If possible, rename the file as soon as you can so it is easier to find, upload, and share later. Otherwise, the files will be named Zoom_0, Zoom_1, and so on, which makes organization harder.

For more information, see Local Recording on Zoom’s support page.
