Lucidchart is a cloud-based application which supports creation of charts and diagrams. For some time, Lucidchart has been free to higher education users, but the company is now instituting a pay-for-use model for universities. This will take effect for Notre Dame on March 1st, 2020. In the new model, there will remain a means for free access. The license structure includes two options within a new Lucidchart ND domain:

  • “Education View” (free license): Read and View existing charts within the ND enterprise
  • “Education Premium” (paid license): Create, Edit, and View charts

Beginning March 1, 2020, in lieu of a Premium license within the new ND domain, existing charts created under the prior “free model” will remain accessible to those who created them for view and comment only. The ability to create or edit charts will require a Premium license. Premium license holders will have access to a Customer Success Manager and to dedicated technical support from Lucidchart. The Lucidchart ND domain will be integrated with Okta.

OIT is developing a request form for acquisition of a Premium license. This license will cost $50 per person per year (prorated for the first year). The SLT has agreed to cover the annual cost of licenses for OIT staff who use Lucidchart. We are working with Lucid to develop a purchase process for other university staff and faculty and will provide more information as this is determined.

OIT will provide additional communication as the March 1st threshold approaches.

Free alternatives for diagramming are available, among them Draw.io and Google Drawings
