Question

How do I connect to the eduroam wireless network with an Apple computer with macOS?

Answer

  1. On your Mac, visit eduroam.nd.edu with your preferred browser

  2. The page should identify your operating system.  If you are on macOS Catalina or later, it will also detect this. If the wrong operating system is detected, use the dropdown at the bottom of the page to select the correct operating system. To determine which operating system you are using, see the article. Click JoinNow.

  3. The eduroam utility will be automatically downloaded (your browser may ask for permission).

  4. Once the file is downloaded, open the downloaded file from your browser.
    1. In Google Chrome, click the arrow next to the downloaded file and then click Open:

    2.  In Safari, double-click the downloaded file to open:
  5. If you cannot find the downloaded file in your browser, click the Downloads folder in your Dock and click on the downloaded file.

  6. Double-click on WIFI_University_of_Notre_Dame application to launch the eduroam connection utility

  7. If you are prompted "Are you sure you want to open it", go ahead and click Open

  8. Follow the app instructions: enter your netid@nd.edu, and your password, then click Next

  9. Type your computer password to begin the configuration of your Mac. Note: the password for your computer is often different from your NetID password. Enter your machine credentials and click OK.

  10. This utility will proceed to set up the eduroam authentication and configuration.  Click Next to begin installing the configuration profile
  11. As the utility runs, several System Certificate Trust Settings will be added to your device.  Click Update Settings each time.  Note: you may be prompted regarding certificates several times, and may be prompted yet again next time you connect to eduroam
  12.  The utility will install a configuration profile on your machine.  You may get a notification, it is okay to dismiss the notification.

  13.  System Preferences should launch.  Click Profiles.

  14.  Select the eduroam profile from the Downloaded profiles and click Install

  15.  A confirmation for installation will pop up.  Click Install.

  16. Type your computer password and select OK to install the profile on your Mac. Note: the password for your computer is often different from your NetID password.

  17. Close the System Preferences Profiles page and navigate back to the JoinNow utility, click Next.

  18. As the utility runs, several 'Trusted Certificates' will be added to your device. Make sure to click Always Allow if prompted regarding your keychain password. Otherwise, you may be prompted regarding certificates several times, and may be prompted yet again next time you connect to eduroam. Note: your keychain password is usually the same as the password you use to login to your computer and is often different from your NetID password.

  19. When the utility finishes, you have successfully joined the eduroam Wi-Fi network

  20. If you are in range of the campus network, you can double-check your Wi-Fi settings for a connection to eduroam to ensure you've finished successfully
