Issue
I need to remotely connect to and control another computer in order to assist somebody.
Resolution
It is possible to use Zoom as a RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) client using the screen sharing feature native to Zoom. For this to work, both users must have a Zoom account, and that they have the client installed. Anyone affiliated with ND can do this by going to notredame.zoom.us.
- Open up the Zoom Application
- On Windows Machines: Start Menu > All Programs > Zoom > Start Zoom
- On Apple Machines: Finder > Applications > zoom.us
- Find the end user who needs assistance in the contacts list in Zoom.
- Right Click their name and select Meet without Video
- The end user should accept the meeting request that pops up on their machine
- User can select Join Audio by Computer if communication is planning to happen via Zoom, or that window can be closed if a form of verbal communication is not needed, or is already established.
- The end user who needs help to should select Share Screen and choose the desktop or window that is giving the issue. It is recommended that they chose the Desktop 1, and pull all Windows on to this Desktop.
- Users will have selections for each open window, and each Desktop. The number of desktops to choose from is based upon the number of monitors the user has.
- Now the screen sharing session has been established. At the top of their screen, the helper should select Options > Request Remote Control
- The end user will have to Accept the request.
Note: Both users have control of the mouse and keyboard simultaneously. This means it is possible to play "tug-of-war" using the mouse and the keyboard. To prevent against this it is highly recommended that verbal communication be established, and turns are taken by users when needing to take control of the mouse or keyboard.
