Before You Begin

Normally, Zoom allows anyone who has your Zoom URL to join the meeting. This is great for ease of use but can allow unwanted guests to join if your Zoom meeting URL is shared via social media or elsewhere. First and foremost, it is important to stress the importance to your students of privacy concerns with conducting courses online and there may be serious repercussions if caught distributing course materials, including the Zoom URL, outside of class.

If you are concerned about unwanted participants joining your meeting, you can turn on “Only authenticated users can join” which forces all participants to first sign into Zoom before joining your meeting. Participants that do not belong to Notre Dame can still join the meeting but will need to sign in with any free Zoom or Google account. We strongly encourage telling all students to sign in with their Notre Dame NetId and password.

Enabling Only Zoom Authenticated Users Can Join

  1. Schedule a new meeting.

Note: You can also edit an existing meeting by clicking on the scheduled meeting within zoom.nd.edu and click Edit this meeting.
  2. In the Meeting Options area, check “Only authenticated users can join”.

  3. Click Save.

  4. Share the Zoom URL or Meeting ID with your students or other participants. Students will need to follow the guide below in order to join once this setting is enabled. Participants not affiliated with Notre Dame will need to sign in with a free Zoom or Google account.
