Google Chrome
Gmail should automatically prompt you to configure mailto: links in Chrome. Click on the overlapping diamond icons in the address bar.
To enable email links in Google Chrome to be opened with Gmail, follow Google’s instructions here:
Set Gmail as default in Chrome.
In Windows 11, Google Chrome must first be enabled as the default Email program before the above steps will work:
- Click the Windows icon at the lower left of the screen (or press the Windows key).
- Click Settings (gear icon).
- Select System → Default apps. (If System cannot be selected after clicking Settings, click the gear icon at the top left of the window.)
- Click either the plus icon under Email (if available) or the listed app (if something other than Google Chrome is chosen).
- Under Choose an app, select Google Chrome.
Firefox
To enable email links in Firefox to be opened with Gmail, follow Mozilla’s instructions here:

Safari
To enable email links in Safari:
- Go to Apple Extensions.
- In the Search Extensions box, enter mailto.
- Click Install Now to install.
This will allow you to send from Gmail by default.
Microsoft Edge
- Click the three dots icon near the upper right corner of Microsoft Edge, then click Settings.
- On the left, click Site Permissions, then click Handlers.
- Make sure Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols is toggled on.
- Open Gmail in Microsoft Edge and accept the prompt.
