How to set up a Notre Dame Gmail account on the Mail app on a Mac
Answer
If you have Mail 9.3 or higher, you can follow these instructions:
- Go to http://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and verify that less secure apps are enabled
- Open the Mail app
- Click Mail in the upper-left corner of the screen
- Click Accounts...
- Click Google
- Type your netid@nd.edu email address on the Enter your email line
- Click Next
- You will be redirected to the Central Authentication Service (CAS). Enter your NetID and password
- Click LOGIN
- Complete Two Step Login (if needed)
- Select the apps you want to use on your computer
- Click Done
If you have a version of Mail that is less than 9.3, then you will need to set your email up, using IMAP settings:
- Go to http://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and verify that less secure apps are enabled
- Enable POP/IMAP access for your Notre Dame Gmail account.
- Sign in to Notre Dame Gmail.
- Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
- Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Select Enable IMAP.
- Click Mail > Preferences....
- On the Accounts tab, click the + button to add a new account.
- Choose Add Other Mail Account...
- Fill in the new window with the following information:
- Full Name: [your name]
- Email Address: your NetID@nd.edu address
- Password: your Notre Dame password
- Click Create
- The page will state that the Account must be manually configured. Click Next
- On the Incoming Mail Server Info screen enter the following information
- Account Type: Select IMAP
- Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
- User Name: your NetID@nd.edu address (Note: your netid should already be entered, but you will need to add @nd.edu)
- Password: your Notre Dame password
- Click Next
- On the Outgoing Mail Server Info screen enter the following information:
- SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
- User Name: your NetID@nd.edu address
- Password: your Notre Dame password
- Click Create
- Switch the outgoing port from 587 to 465
- Check Google's recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.
