Before You Begin
For class meetings, it is recommended that you record to the cloud. Breakout rooms cannot be recorded automatically, either in the cloud or locally. Participant’s can record breakout rooms locally if they are given permission by the host.
Note: Local recordings are saved to a user’s machine and cannot be recovered by OIT. These recordings are neither saved nor captioned in Panopto.
Enable Host Permission for Participants to Record Locally
- Navigate to zoom.nd.edu.
- Log in your NetID and password.
- Navigate to Settings in the left-hand navigation menu
- Click the Recording tab.
- In the Local Recording section, check the box next to Allow hosts and participants to record the meeting to a local file.
- Click Save to update your account settings.
Allow Participants to Record During Zoom Meeting
Once you have enabled the setting above, the host can allow any participant to record locally to their computer. To do so:
- Start Zoom meeting as host.
- Click Participants in the bottom navigation of Zoom.
- In the Participants menu navigate to the participant who will be granted recording privileges. Click More next to their name.
- Select the option to Allow Record.
- Repeat as needed. Assign at least one person per breakout room the responsibility to record.
- You can monitor whether a participant is recording in a breakout room from the recording icon next to the participant’s name.
Recording Locally in a Breakout Room
In any Zoom meeting, the host may choose to use the breakout room functionality. Participants in a Zoom meeting may record the contents of that breakout room by following these steps once in a breakout room:
- Click Record in the Zoom menu to begin the recording.
- Click Continue if you see the message “Record this meeting to this computer?”
- Click Stop to end the recording or leave the breakout room.
- Once the Zoom meeting ends, the local recording will process and produce a file in .MP4 format.
- The locally recorded file is available only to the person who initiated the recording and is not under the immediate control of the meeting host.
By default, all recordings will be placed in Zoom folder found in the following file path on these devices:
PC: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Zoom
Mac: /Users/User Name/Documents/Zoom - The local recording will then need to be sent to the instructor/host if needed.
