Question
How do I connect my computer to the wired network in the residence hall?
Context
Students connecting device in campus residence hall
Answer
In order to connect to the wired network, you will need the hardware to do so:
- A device with an Ethernet port: Most current computers come with an Ethernet port located on the back or side of the computer
- Some laptops, and most mobile devices do not have Ethernet ports. You may be able to purchase an adapter for your laptop to add an Ethernet option (check with the vendor or store you purchased it from)
- An Ethernet cable (can be purchased at the Hammes Hub in the Bookstore or your preferred electronics supplier)
- An available Ethernet port on the wall: With few exceptions, all rooms in residence halls and most campus offices are equipped with Ethernet ports or “jacks” on the wall.
To register your device to the wired network follow these instructions:
- Before plugging the device into the wired network, use a web browser (on any device) and visit zonereg.nd.eduand login with your NetID and password.
- Complete the form that appears:
- Host name - Choose a unique name, such as frsorin-imac, instead of merely iMac, which may already exist on the network.
- Domain name - in the residence halls it should be resnet.nd.edu
- Ethernet/MAC address - Follow these instructions to locate the MAC address for your device.
- Device Type - from the provided list select the closest match to the type of device you are registering
- User NetID - should be the NetID of the user or owner of the device
- Admin NetID - usually would be the same as the User NetID
- When you've completed the form click Register.
- With the device powered OFF, connect the Ethernet cable to both your computer and the network jack in your room.
- Turn the device ON
- It should now be ready for use on the wired network.
If the device does not work on the network, the network jack may not be active. If there is a different network jack available, try connecting to that. If this is the only available jack, submit a network jack activation request form.
