Question: How do I report Spam or Phishing email?
Context: Gmail accessed through a web browser.
Answer: First you need to identify the email message as either Spam Or Phishing:
Is the email Spam?
Spam is unwanted advertising for a product or service. It poses no danger. It's just annoying.
Here's how you report spam:
- Open the message you'd like to report.
- Click the spam button
in the toolbar above the message.
This lets Google know the message is Spam. Once a message has been reported by multiple users, Google will block the sender.
Is the email Phishing?
Phishing emails ask you to supply personal information like passwords or credit card numbers or they may ask you to click on a link. The emails often appear to be from an authority at Notre Dame but request that you to do something out of the ordinary like purchase gift cards or ignore normal procedures. You should never respond to these emails. Report them to Google like this:
- Open the email you'd like to report.
- At the top-right corner of the message, click the 3 stacked dots
- Select Report Phishing.
That brings up the menu below..
Once you click "Report Phishing" Google and Notre Dame OIT will be notified so we can prevent further emails from this sender.
