Panopto is a video platform available to all faculty, staff, and students at Notre Dame which has three primary uses:
- Video hosting - Upload a video to Panopto and share a link or embed it in Sakai or on a web page.
- Screencasting - Use Panopto's software on your computer to record any combination of video, audio, and PowerPoint.
- Lecture capture - There are multiple Panopto equipped classrooms which allow automatic recording of lectures.
1. Video hosting
- Bring your own content: Many faculty already have videos they’ve used in the past. Upload your videos to Panopto and no matter how old your video is or what devices students are using, your video will look just as good as the day it was recorded.
- YouTube support: Nobody likes reinventing the wheel or recreating content. Panopto now lets you embed YouTube videos within a Panopto presentation. When you find a great video on YouTube and want to add a little more context to it, it couldn't be easier. Record an introduction in Panopto and insert the YouTube link. You can also set the start and end points of the YouTube video so students will only see the part of the YouTube video you want them to see. Just follow the instructions below.

2. Screencasting
Panopto makes it easy to create and share content. Panopto can record your computer’s screen, webcam, and microphone and quickly share it with your class. Just as importantly, you can easily reuse that content.
Here are some common Panopto uses:
- If you have to cancel class, use Panopto to record a make-up lecture.
- Pre-record some content to flip a class. Spend less time presenting and more time discussing.
- Record supplemental or clarifying material to cover topics in more depth.
- Record demonstrations of applications or websites.
- Do you ever answer the same questions over... and over.... and over...? Record that answer once and share it with everyone.
3. Lecture capture
Automatically recording your lectures in Panopto equipped rooms is easy. You just walk into your classroom and start teaching exactly as you normally would. Projected content, video of the chalkboard area, and audio are all recorded during your scheduled class time. After class ends the recording is automatically uploaded and processed and students can watch it about an hour later.
While this is obviously great for review, consider the benefits for these other scenarios:
- How many class periods do students miss due to illness, travel delays, athletics, and job interviews?
- Students may have an unreported physical or learning disability.
- Some research suggests women are less likely to interrupt an instructor to ask a question during a lecture.
- In instances where there may be a language barrier, hearing the material again can be incredibly helpful.
- Some faculty simply record their lectures so they can review their teaching style.
Currently only some classrooms have the necessary technology for these recordings. If you would like to use Panopto, make sure you work with the registrar to get scheduled in one of those rooms. Contact oithelp@nd.edu with any questions or comments.
