Question

How do I update the system software on my Mac?

Answer

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates. Please allow ample time to perform any updates to your system and ensure your important files are backed up.
NOTE: Choose Upgrade Now ONLY if you wish to upgrade to the latest release of macOS (Big Sur).  This is not recommended for all users.  For guidance on upgrading to macOS Big Sur, please see this guide.
  2. For Earlier Versions of macOS
    1.  If you wish to remain on the same major release (Mojave, Catalina, etc.), please click the blue more info... link below the text "Other updates are available.  Your Mac will try to update later tonight and will automatically restart."

    2. Click Install Now to install selected updates.

  3. For macOS Big Sur
    1. If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them.  You might be asked to enter your administrator password. Please allow ample time to perform any updates to your system and ensure your important files are backed up.

  4. When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and FaceTime.
  5. To automatically install future updates, including for apps that you got from the App Store, select “Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.

NOTE: For individuals using macOS 10.13 High Sierra or earlier, please work with your local departmental IT support to assist you in evaluating which version of macOS is most suitable for your hardware and how to get it installed.  If you have any further questions, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111, oithelp@nd.edu, or start a chat at servicenow.nd.edu
