Question

How can I backup my work computer?

Answer

Note: ND Backup for Windows, the backup utility developed by OIT, was retired in June 2018. Please move to a new backup solution to ensure your data is protected.

As platforms have grown and evolved, so have our needs. We’ve needed more space, better monitoring of backups, advanced restore options, and litigation hold features. We’ve had to look for new solutions. To meet these evolving needs, the OIT offers the following supported options:

CrashPlan (~$82/year)

A high-quality backup tool that securely saves data in the cloud and provides advanced monitoring, restore, and compliance features. Each subscription is $78/year and includes unlimited storage and backup for up to four devices.

Devices must be tied to the NetID for the CrashPlan account. The device count includes any virtual machines with CrashPlan installed. You may install CrashPlan on personal devices but should keep in mind that IT staff will have access to these devices and their data for support purposes.

Get started: To add new users to CrashPlan, please submit your request at the Request Crashplan Account form.

To download Crashplan, visit the OIT Software Downloads.

Windows Users Please Note: After you download the appropriate .zip installer from the link above, be sure to extract all files before running the .exe to install the CrashPlan client.

You can also log into the CrashPlan Web Console at https://crashplan.nd.edu:4285/

Google Backup and Sync (Free)

Similar to ND Backup, Backup and Sync allows you to select folders you wish to back up and stores them in your unlimited Google Drive. If you need to restore your data, you can log into Google Drive and download any data you need.

Get started: Download and install Backup and Sync

Google Drive / Box (Free)

As more of our work moves to the cloud, our files aren’t even stored on our local computers. This can make backup redundant, as the data is maintained entirely offsite. Moving your data into Google Drive or Box allows you to work with your data anywhere, anytime, on any device.

Get started: Visit the OIT website to learn more about these tools and help decide which platform is right for you.
