Question

How do I update the system software on my Mac?

Context

It is vital that the operating system is kept up to date in accordance with the best practices of the Office of Information Technology and Information Security. When an update needs to be made, it is oftentimes necessary to continue interacting with core systems and to continue utilizing the impacted computer for its intended purpose.

According to the Endpoint Security Standard, the requirement is to use a vendor-supported operating system that provides updates and customer support. For Apple, that means utilizing the latest version of macOS or the most recent patched version of the previous operating system version.

Answer

  1. Choose System Preferences (macOS Monterey or older) from the Apple menu, then click Software Update to check for updates.  For systems running macOS Ventura or later, click the Apple Menu, select System Settings>General>Software Update. Please allow ample time to perform any updates to your system and ensure your important files are backed up.
  2. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now
    1. Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.
    2. Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey.

    3. For macOS Ventura or later, the screen will look like this:
  1. When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its preinstalled Apple system apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and FaceTime.  This does not include third party apps like Microsoft Office, Cisco AnyConnect, or anything from the App Store.
  2. To automatically install future updates, including for apps that you got from the App Store, select “Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.

NOTE: For individuals using anything prior to macOS 12 Monterey, please work with your local departmental IT support to assist you in updating to the latest release of macOS Ventura.  If you have any further questions, please contact the Service Desk at 574-631-8111, oithelp@nd.edu, or start a chat at servicenow.nd.edu
