How do I update the system software on my Mac?

Answer
- Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates. Please allow ample time to perform any updates to your system and ensure your important files are backed up.
NOTE: Choose Upgrade Now ONLY if you wish to upgrade to the latest release of macOS (Big Sur). This is not recommended for all users. For guidance on upgrading to macOS Big Sur, please see this guide.

- When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and FaceTime.
- To automatically install future updates, including for apps that you got from the App Store, select “Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.
