Before You Begin

Zoom cloud recordings will be copied to Panopto, deleted from Zoom, and will only be available in Panopto. More information on accessing and sharing your recordings in Panopto can be found in this knowledge base article. For most use cases, recording with Zoom and choosing the “Record to the Cloud” is the recommended option. Overall, it’s an easier process to follow. However, there may be times when recording locally in Zoom is preferred.

Important Note! If you are are using Zoom on the classroom computer, it is STRONGLY advised that you NOT use the Record on this Computer feature. These recordings will be permanently lost once you log out of the computer.

In this document, we will show the process to record locally in Zoom and then upload to a service supported by ND called Panopto. Remember, if at all possible keep your recordings short: students will be more likely to watch them, they are easier to re-record if needed, and it's easier on your Internet connection.

While uploading to Panopto has additional steps, it provides several advantages over recording directly to the Zoom Cloud:

Recording Locally in Zoom

Note: If you already have a recording or video on your computer, it can be uploaded directly to Panopto. Skip to the step: Uploading to Panopto and Sharing in Canvas.

First, we need to enable a setting in Zoom that will make the videos higher quality.

  1. Open the Zoom app on your computer.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the top right to open the settings.

  3. Click Recording on the left navigation.
  4. Check the box next to Optimize for 3rd party video editor.
  5. That's it, no saving is needed and you're ready to begin the next steps.

To record locally in Zoom:

1) Join a Zoom meeting.

2) Click the Record button in Zoom.

3) Click Record on this Computer.

4) After the meeting has concluded, the recording will begin processing immediately. After it’s finished processing, it’ll open the folder that contains the recording files.

By default, all recordings will be placed in a Zoom folder found in the following file path on these devices:

PC: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Zoom

Mac: /Users/User Name/Documents/Zoom

Important Note: By default, the audio/video file (MP4) will be named Zoom_0.mp4. The file that ends in ".mp4" is the only one we care about for now. If possible, rename the files as soon as possible to make it easier to find, upload, and share in the next steps. Otherwise, the recordings will be named Zoom_0, Zoom_1 etc which makes organizing and uploading more difficult.

For more information, see Local Recording on Zoom’s support page.

Uploading to Panopto and Sharing in Canvas

After recording locally to your computer in Zoom or if you have your own recording/video through a different method. The next step is to upload to Panopto and share it within your Canvas course.

Option 1 is the easiest method and will result in a simple folder with all your recordings/videos in one place.

Option 2 demonstrates how to embed a video into specific locations throughout Canvas.

Option 1: Upload All Videos to a Single Folder

1) Login to canvas.nd.edu

2) Navigate to your Canvas course site.

3) Enable the Panopto Tool in your Canvas course site.

4) Click on the Panopto tool in the left navigation of the Canvas course. If you do not see the tool, try refreshing the page.

5) Click Create within Canvas.

6) Click Upload Media within the drop-down menu.

7) On the next screen, you have two options for uploading videos:

a) You can drag and drop files from your computer into the area labeled Choose video or audio files.

b) You can also click Choose video or audio files
and it will open the Finder on a Mac (Explorer on Windows) to allow you to find and select files on your computer. Multiple files can be selected if needed.

8) The video files will begin processing. You can close the window and check back on it. Depending on the length of the recording it may take some time to finish processing.

9) Most importantly, make sure your students know to click on the Panopto tool in the left navigation of your Canvas site to view your recordings.

Option 2: Embed Panopto Videos in Canvas Content

The previous steps highlight the easiest method for sharing your Panopto videos in Canvas. However, you may at times want to embed a video player within your course content - whether it’s a Canvas Discussion, Assignment, or Lesson:

1) Login to canvas.nd.edu.

2) Navigate to your Canvas course site.

3) Navigate to wherever you would like to embed the video and click on the Panopto icon in the text editor. For example, Canvas Announcements, Assignments, Pages, or Lessons tools are all options for embedding Panopto videos.

4) It’s especially important to upload the videos to a location that’s easily viewable by all students. On the next window, click the drop-down arrow.

5) Under the section “All Folders” click the drop-down arrow next to My Folder.

6) Click Shared.

7) Confirm you are in the Shared folder on the next screen and then click the Upload tab.

8) Click Upload Media.

9) On the next screen, you have two options for uploading videos:

a) You can drag and drop files from your computer into the area labeled Choose video or audio files.

b) You can also click Choose video or audio files and it will open a window to allow you to find and select files on your computer. Multiple files can be selected if needed.

10) The video files will begin uploading. Once it’s finished uploading you can click the green Insert button to insert the video into your Canvas content page.

Note: It will take some time to finish processing the video, so don’t worry if the video says “This video isn’t ready yet.” Once it’s finished processing it’ll automatically be ready for viewing by students.

11) Repeat as necessary.
