Question

How do I update the system software on my Mac?

Answer

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates. Please allow ample time to perform any updates to your system and ensure your important files are backed up.
  2. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now
    1. Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.
    2. Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey.

  1. When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date. That includes Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and FaceTime.
  2. To automatically install future updates, including for apps that you got from the App Store, select “Automatically keep my Mac up to date.” Your Mac will notify you when updates require it to restart, so you can always choose to install those later.

NOTE: For individuals using anything prior to macOS 11 Big Sur, please work with your local departmental IT support to assist you in updating to the latest release of macOS Monterey.  If you have any further questions, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111, oithelp@nd.edu, or start a chat at servicenow.nd.edu
