About iOS Upgrades

To check what operating system you have installed, go to Settings > General > About > Version. Wikipedia maintains a detailed comparison of iOS devices. The OIT recommends that all iOS devices be upgraded to the most recent version of iOS that your hardware allows for improved performance, security and functionality.

Before installing any iOS upgrade

The OIT provides basic support for current model iOS devices (generally 2 years old or newer) to enable users to connect to the ND wireless network, to access ND Google email and calendaring services, and any central IT service designed for mobile devices. For additional support, please contact your hardware vendor, cell phone carrier, or the provider of the software application.

Backup:

We strongly recommend running a backup of your device before installing any iOS upgrades to keep your data safe. There are two ways to do this, either from a computer, or from the device itself in iCloud.

Upgrading:

There are two ways to upgrade. One requires that you have a wireless signal to the device, and the other is through your computer.

Via Wireless:

This method tends to be the easiest, but you do need to have a strong wireless signal. Open Settings, then go to General > Software Update. You will see information about the upgrade you are about to receive and a button to install it. You will either have to have 50% or more battery life or have the device plugged in for the button to be available.

Via Computer:

This is the method to choose if you do not have a wireless signal. Connect your device to the computer with the standard cable and open iTunes. iTunes should then prompt you to upgrade the device. If you are not prompted, you can manually check for updates by selecting the device on the left and clicking the Check for Update button. The upgrade will then download and start installing on your device.

After the install completes and your device restarts, you can check to see what iOS version you now have by going to Settings > General > About and then look to see what is next to Version.
