Question
How to retain access to electronic materials when your NetID expires.
Answer
The information below will help you move your emails, documents, and other content to your alumni account.
NetIDs of students generally expire 60 days following graduation (see NetID Access Policy). You will generally receive email notifications starting 30 days before your account will expire. You must transfer your content before your account expires.
When your @nd.edu student account expires, the University will automatically forward all new messages sent to your @nd.edu address to your @alumni.nd.edu address. Due to technical constraints, we are unable to provide this service for classes graduating prior to 2017.
Note: After graduation if you have a different role and affiliation (e.g. staff or faculty) with the university, your automatic email forwarding will cease and will not be reinstated, even if you subsequently leave that role.
Gmail and Drive
- Get access to your new Alumni Google account by visiting the Alumni Email page at myNotreDame.
- Next, inform others of your new Notre Dame Alumni address by setting an autoresponder on your ND email. Click here if you need help with that: KB0013025
- Move your Gmail and Drive content to your new email address
- Go to Google’s transfer content tool
- Enter your alumni email address on the line Enter an email address
- Click the blue Send Code button
- Open an incognito window in Chrome by clicking Ctrl + Shift + N
- Sign in to your alumni email account: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox
- Open the message entitled Verify your account and click the blue Get confirmation code button.
- Copy your unique confirmation code and click the blue Continue link at the bottom of the page
- Sign into your Notre Dame account
- Click the blue Start Transfer button
The process to transfer content can take up to a week to complete. You’ll receive an email when it is finished.
Google Photos is not attached to drive storage, and will not be transferred by the process described above. To port photos to a new account, you must share the original library with a new account and add the shared library to the new one. Note this is only if you are transferring through the "transfer" tool to another google account. Google Takeout works for Photos.

Remove Notre Dame licensed software from your computer
While you're a student at Notre Dame, a variety of licensed software is made available to you for academic use. Now that you are leaving Notre Dame, you need to remove such software from your own computer. Since these programs are licensed only for use by members of the Notre Dame community, you will no longer be eligible to have these programs installed on your computer after you graduate. You DO NOT need to uninstall any software which was pre-installed on your computer or which you purchased through the Hammes Hub.
Some of these Notre Dame licensed programs include:
- Mathematica
- MATLAB
- S-Plus
- SAS
- SPSS
- SYSTAT
Qualtrics
When you leave the University and you lose access to the ND network, you will also lose access to your Qualtrics account. You can download (export) your surveys and responses for reference.
Need a new computer?
ND students and alumni can take advantage of computer and tech discounts offered at the Hammes Bookstore.
