What is a VPN?

Answer

VPN stands for "Virtual Private Network." The University's VPN permits computers and other technology systems that are not connected to a secure campus network, like eduroam or the wired network, to access the Notre Dame network as if they were connected to a secure campus network. We recommend using the VPN whenever you are connecting the ND network from off-campus and accessing University information, and some IT services require a VPN connection when accessed from outside a secured campus network.

Like registered and sealed mail, a VPN delivers your network traffic to campus in an encrypted "tunnel." By requiring you to supply your password when connecting, the VPN also provides OIT servers with an extra assurance that the person connecting to it is a member of the ND community.
